Connecticut HB 5340 passed the House 99–43 on May 1, 2026, and the Senate 27–9 on May 7, 2026; Governor Ned Lamont signed the bill as Public Act 26-127 on May 20, 2026, with provisions allowing plug-in solar devices up to 1,200 watts without utility interconnection approval taking effect October 1, 2026.

What HB 5340 actually allows

System size

Up to 1,200W AC

UL-listed or NRTL-certified certification required. Multiple plug-in solar devices are permitted provided their combined output does not exceed 1,200 watts AC; devices must also comply with the National Electrical Code and Connecticut state building and fire codes.

No utility approval

Interconnection waived

No application to your utility required. Self-installation with listed equipment is sufficient.

Effective date: October 1, 2026

Plug-in solar will be legal in Connecticut as of October 1, 2026. You cannot connect a plug-in system to the grid until that date.
